Intense Pulsed Light is a treatment that utilizes high frequency laser energy to improve the skin. It focuses on areas of pigmented and damaged skin cells to enhance the look and feel of the skin. Using a special handheld device, Dr. Cohen will administer wavelengths on light to target the desired areas of the skin.
The light energy works by heating the skin cells and underlying tissue which results in a breakdown of the cells that triggers the body’s natural healing response. This treatment effectively removes blemishes and the signs of aging in the form of dark patches, spider veins, wrinkles, and scars.
What Can be Treated With an IPL Treatment
The light energy that is released from IPL penetrates deep down into the second layer of the skin called the dermis. During the treatment process, the epidermis, the layer at the top, remains unharmed. When the cells absorb the light energy, it is converted to heat. The heat produced by the laser can help solve common skin problems such as sun damage, irregular pigmentation, and facial redness caused by rosacea.
The IPL Procedure
First, the area of the skin to be treated is cleaned well. Then a cool gel is applied on the area. After this, a handheld device is used to deliver light on the affected area. You will need to wear dark glasses as the light energy delivered is intense. As the pulses of light come in contact with your skin, you may feel a mild stinging sensation. The feeling is like the snap of a rubber band on your skin.
The average treatment duration is 20 – 30 minutes, depending on the area under treatment. For the best results you, you may have to have up to 6 treatments. Treatments should be spaced a month apart to allow for skin healing. A bit of swelling may occur in the affected area, but this passes within a few days.
Preparation for IPL
Before undergoing an IPL treatment, Dr. Cohen will perform an initial evaluation of the skin to help determine the areas of treatment and an appropriate treatment technique to help enhance those areas. During this time, he will ask you about your medical history as well. If you have any current or past skin conditions, it’s important that you let him know ahead of time. He will then inform you on what you can expect to experience during the procedure.
Prior to the treatment procedure, you will have to avoid being exposed to direct sunlight or tanning beds. You should also avoid the application of chemical peels, waxing, collagen injectables, and medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen that increase the risk of bleeding. Creams containing vitamins, such as A, and glycolic acid should be avoided as well.
Candidates for an IPL Treatment
Ideal candidates for an IPL treatment have difficulties dealing with skin problems such as hyperpigmentation and rosacea and desire an improvement in the look and feel of their skin. It isn’t recommended for individuals who have thick or raised scarring or those with prior skin conditions that can increase the chance of risks. During your consultation, Dr. Cohen will help determine if an IPL treatment is a suitable option for you.
