What Are IPL and Skin Lasers?

IPL and skin lasers are revolutionary treatment tools that are used in a wide variety of cosmetic correction procedures, including addressing burn scars.

IPL (intense pulsed light) uses quick light pulses to target scar tissue and damaged skin, promoting the generation of new healthy skin. This treatment method uses multiple wavelengths of light.

Laser treatments instead use laser energy to achieve these results, and they can penetrate more deeply into the skin. They utilize a single wavelength of light.

How Do IPL and Skin Lasers Treat Burn Scars?

Burn scars are basically hardened skin tissue that has formed over injuries caused by extreme heat. What IPL and laser treatments do is use heating energy to penetrate deep into the skin. This heat stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells, making scars look less noticeable.

Am I a Good Candidate for IPL and Skin Lasers for Burn Reconstruction?

Patients with scars caused by mild burns are good candidates for burn reconstruction with IPL and lasers. Candidates with moderate to severe burns may be better served by other reconstruction methods. Patients must be in good health and have realistic expectations.

Your Consultation

Before getting burn reconstruction treatments using IPL and lasers, patients must first come in for a consultation. Their scars will be examined to determine if these treatments are suitable for correction. Their complete health history will also be discussed, along with their goals for treatment.

Dr. Cohen will discuss the patient’s options in terms of IPL and laser treatments, and a treatment will be chosen. Dr. Cohen will then go over the details of the chosen procedure, making sure the patient is fully prepared.

Your Burn Reconstruction Session

At the start of the treatment session, a local or topical anesthetic might be applied to the patient’s skin. The IPL or laser handpiece is then placed on the target area, where the energy is sent to stimulate the tissue underneath the scars.

Sessions will involve running the handpiece over the affected area or areas multiple times, depending on the size of the scar and the thickness of the scar tissue. Multiple sessions may be required.

Aftercare Following Treatment

Following the IPL or laser burn reconstruction session, the skin around the target area may look red and feel tender for a few hours. This will go away after a day, and the recovery period is virtually non-existent. Patients will be advised to apply moisturizing lotion on the treated spots and to avoid applying makeup in these areas for at least 24 hours.

How Much Do IPL and Skin Lasers for Burn Reconstruction Cost?

The cost for burn reconstruction using IPL or skin lasers depends on a few factors. These include the size of the scar, the number of sessions involved, and the exact type of treatment used.
