Hair Transplant Overview:
Now you can have a permanent and natural looking solution for hair loss and nobody has to know you’ve had treatment. What used to be complex surgery is basically now a sophisticated process of moving hair from one part of your body to another area. Hair transplantation has is also successful for eyebrows, beards and moustaches. Hair transplant is done as an outpatient procedure which is performed under local anesthesia.
Hair can be harvested in three different ways which are discussed below. Hair is taken from areas of the scalp that are not prone to hair loss and placed in areas that are lost or thinning. The individual hairs called microfollicular grafts are individually planted into the scalp giving the most natural hairline possible. Local anesthetic is used and down time is minimal.
Automated follicular unit extraction (FUE): Automated follicular unit harvests one hair or small groups with a small coring needle (called “follicular unit extraction”).The FUE method is different from the strip method as the FUE extraction sites heal in a random pattern of circular scars, which is easier to hide in those patients who prefer to keep their hair very short. The FUE can also be utilized for those patients who have had prior strip procedures to harvest more hair. This procedure is also less invasive and recovery is a little more comfortable than a strip. It can take longer and give less yield than the strip. It also requires that the head be shaved in the donor site and it will take some time for the hair to grow back. Large areas may require multiple sessions. It may not be a good option for patients with curly hair as there can be a higher rate of hair root
ARTAS Robot: The ARTAS procedure is a computer assisted, image-guided and doctor controlled robot . It is basically the same idea as the follicular unit extraction but harvesting with the robot is automated. We guide the ARTAS® through the entire FUE procedure before the grafts are removed and placed in the exact angle and pattern of your natural hair growth . This makes it faster, and this outpatient procedure generally takes about half a day. The result is a natural looking head of hair with minimal downtime.
Strip graft: Utilizing the strip method in hair restoration surgery maximizes the yield by removing the donor tissue from the back of the head in a single thin strip where the density is the highest and those hairs have the best long-term stability. The procedure is performed under a local anesthesia. This procedure is a good choice for patients looking to restore a larger area. The down side of this procedure is that it leaves a scar in the back if the head so it’s not a great option for patients who wear their hair very short. In patients with longer hair the scar can be hard to find.
