Chin and Jaw Augmentation Mentoplasty or Genioplasty are terms used to describe chin surgery that involves the augmentation or reshaping of the chin. With chin augmentation, a silicone implant is inserted underneath the skin. Typically, the surgeon will make the incision in the crease under the chin and close it with sutures that have to be removed after five days. The incision can be made inside the mouth; in this case, it is closed with resorbable, dissolvable sutures. To minimize swelling, the chin can be taped and a compression strap can be worn. If a jaw implant is inserted, the incisions are made inside the mouth on either side of the lower lip and are closed with dissolvable sutures.

Chin Reduction

Craniofacial surgery is the term to describe the correction of misshapen jaws that are caused either by misalignment of the teeth and jaws (malocclusion), or mild inadequate tissue development (hypoplasia), which can appear as a recessed upper jaw. In this surgery, power bone instruments are used to reduce the chin bone. In cases of a chin deficiency, bone surgery or an osteotomy can be performed, which will move the bone of the chin forward following various oblique bone incisions to reshape the chin. A chin reduction can be performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as nose surgery and liposuction of the face and neck. Alternative options to implants for the chin can be found with fat transfers and other filling substances.

Procedures are performed by Dr. Barry Cohen, Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with great interest in cosmetic surgery. Procedures conducted in Rockville MD, and McLean, VA.
